When Life Gets Busy, Take The Back Roads

I can’t be the only one who finds peace, comfort, and some kind of balance when you take the road less traveled- but like, literally.

 Obviously, we know that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, or a straight road in this case. The straighter roads typically allow us to go faster too. So, if you don’t want to get run over, you better keep up with the traffic. Sort of like the fast pace lives that most of us live. Rat race, life in the fast lane, hurrying to work so we can hurry home. Hurry up and wait, hurry up and live, and eventually hurry up and die.

 We spend many days wishing time would pass a little quicker in our younger years. Then as we start to age, we almost always find ourselves wishing we could turn back time. Wishing we could re live some of our best moments in life that we didn’t know at the time we would cherish so much.

 On days where I feel like I can’t keep up, or there just isn’t enough time in the day to be the best I can at work, the best mom at home, and the best wife for my husband. I have to remind myself that I need to take care of myself first. My peace is found on a back road, music up, and no traffic around. I know the curves of these roads, so I know when I need to brake, or when I have time to hit the gas a little.

 When I feel like I’m stuck in the fast lane, and I’m going to miss my exit- I make sure I make it off that exit before spiraling out of control because I didn’t take care of my car and I’m pushing my luck everyday with bad tires. Just like I can feel myself spiraling when I have taken on too much to remain mentally focused, and I become physically drained.

 You’ll catch me on the back roads with no real place to be. Ill drive through my hometown and remember all the things I loved as a little girl growing up. I remember thinking I wish I was a grown up, and I remember when my whole family lived on two streets in town, and no matter where you went someone you knew was yelling hello to you as you passed by on your bike.

 When I take the extra 20 minutes to drive down a backroad and just clear my mind, it completely rejuvenates me. It gives me life, it makes me happy, and it makes me smile. Smiles are contagious, so just imagine the effect you could have on others after taking the back road and feeling better. You become the motivated person to them. You give someone else a reason to smile, and that my friend should help fill your soul.

 Next time you are having a rough day, or week, or whatever- head out and find yourself lost in thought on a backroad with your favorite song on repeat. Sometimes we don’t have a lot of time for this kind of thing, and we forget how important self-care is. Take the back road to pick your kids up from their activities or hop off that highway and exit early and find a little peace on a different route home. This way you can arrive home to your family with out brain fog and exhaustion. Take care of you, the rest will fall into place.
